Truth #62 – The Awakening Process: Consciousness II

The Universe is a dynamic structured field of Being observing itself, and in observing itself is creating a representation of itself as a material world. The Cosmos is an aware field of Being. Although the laws of physics are valid, we must change our assumptions as to what they are about. They are not laws of the unfolding of the physical world of space, time and matter. They are the laws of the unfolding of consciousness. The hard problem in philosophy and psychology, according to David Chalmers, Australian philosopher and cognitive scientist, is: How does something as immaterial as consciousness arise from something as unconscious as matter.

The behavior of Americans within our institutions reveals our level of awareness vis-à-vis Reality. A sure way to measure the level of consciousness of the people in a given institution is the ratio of their responses to reactions. To ensure that progress toward a sustainable human community is “ratcheting” upward toward becoming permanent, we need a plan or “road map” that acknowledges the structure of human consciousness. Without that we are always subject to the periodic emergence of atavistic behaviors–behaviors that are a reversion to unconscious ancient or primitive reactions.

Atavism seems to be happening lately in the fear-driven chaos within our institutions, i.e., government, health, foreign policy, criminal justice, civil rights and law enforcement. These self-destructive behaviors ripping apart our community are, of course, nothing new. In 1968 Gov. Otto Kerner headed the so-called riot commission. “What it delivered to President Lyndon B. Johnson was … shockingly, comprehensively grim. The United States, the commission concluded, is a hopelessly divided nation that has locked its Black citizens in impoverishment and swallowed the key, that good white folks were out-to-lunch and therefore as culpable as the white supremacists were malignant.”[i]

Some 40 years later, unconscious Americans are still in charge.  “‘What white Americans have never fully understood–but what the Negro can never forget,’ the Kerner Report concluded back in 1968, ‘is that white society is deeply implicated in the ghetto. White institutions created it, white institutions maintain it, and white society condones it.”[ii]
